The Foster County Sheriff is an elected position with a four year term. The current Foster County Sheriff is Ian Mattice.
As the Sheriff he performs the following duties:

Sheriff Alan Ian Mattice, comes to us from LaMoure where he served as the Police Chief there for three years. Before that he worked for the Jamestown Police Dept for 10 years, as a supervisor on the night shift, and assistant commander of the James River Special Operations Team. His first job in Law Enforcement was for Walsh County up in Grafton where he worked for a total of four years as a Deputy Sheriff . Ian is a graduate of Alexandria Technical College where he received his degree in Law Enforcement. Ian also attended culinary school and loves to cook for his family. Ian has been married for 21 years, to his wife Hazel and they have four sons. Ian was appointed Sheriff of Foster County in Jan of 2015, and was elected on Nov 2016.
Deputy Ben Kothrade is originally from Minnesota where he got his Associates degree in Law Enforcement from Alexandria Technical College. His first job in law enforcement was for Walsh County where he was a Deputy Sheriff for almost a year. Ben has also worked for Burleigh County as a Deputy Sheriff as well as in the jail. Ben has been with the department since July of 2016. In Ben’s spare time he likes to be out on the lake fishing in the summer or out hunting in the fall.
Deputy Jayson Lee is originally from Hawley Minnesota. Jayson attended Lake Region State College where he put himself through the Police Academy. Jayson worked with the North Dakota Highway Patrol working security of the Capital building.
Deputy Nickolas Oster is our newest deputy who started in March of 2017. Nickolas comes to us from Lake Region State College where he attended the police academy. Nickolas is new to the job but has much excitement for what he will learn.
